For the third consecutive year, the Quirino Awards will become the main showcase for Ibero-American animation, bringing together the main protagonists of the sector in a ceremony that will be held digitally on June 27th.

A total of 22 works from ten countries in the region (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Paraguay, Portugal, Spain and Uruguay) will aim for these awards created to pay tribute to Ibero-American talent and creativity. The Quirino Awards, which have the main sponsorship of the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Tenerife Film Commission, were scheduled to hold their third edition on April 18th in the city of Santa Cruz and have had to change their date of celebration and format as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new online awards ceremony will be broadcast through the YouTube channel of the Quirino Awards at 8:00 p.m. Spanish time zone (3PM Argentina and Brazil / 1PM Mexico) and the finalist directors will participate in the nine categories: best feature film, series, short film, school short film, commissioned film, animation for video game, visual development, animation design, sound design and original music. The finalist works reflect the international projection of Ibero-American animation and have a wide diversity of themes, graphic styles and animation techniques. The list of all the finalist works can be found here.

The awards ceremony will be the final touch of the so-called “Quirino month” in which a series of online activities and events will take place, structured around the Co-Production and Business Forum, a platform for professionals in Ibero-American animation that has been organized since 2018 parallel to the Quirino Awards. In this exceptional edition, the Forum will organize from May 26th to June 10th digital meetings between the nearly 90 companies in the sector, including producers, distributors, channels, sales agencies and potential co-producers from around the world interested in Ibero-American animation. The Quirino Co-Production and Business Forum has the collaboration of ICEX, Animation From Spain and PROEXCA, and in its 2019 edition, it brought together professionals from 20 countries who participated in more than 630 B2B meetings.

Some of the first confirmed activities within the Forum program will take place on May 28th and it will be, on the one hand, a presentation of La Liga de la Animación Iberoamericana (The Ibero-American Animation League), an association conceived by the Quirino Awards together with the Pixelatl Festival (Mexico) and Animation! Ventana Sur (Argentina) to promote projects in the region internationally. And, on the other hand, the pitch of the “Firsts” project will take place as a La Liga Award project, selected last December in Animation! of Ventana Sur. The “Firsts” series by Bernardita Ojeda is a Chilean project co-produced between Pájaro and Typpo Creative Lab that, thanks to this recognition, will be presented to professionals in the sector with the aim of speeding up their financing and production process.

In the middle of May, all the activities that will take place throughout the Quirino month will be announced. And on Monday, May 25th, an online press conference will take place in which the details of all the activities will be announced, as well as the news of the awards ceremony.

About the Quirino Awards

The awards are named after the creator of the first animated feature film in history, the Italian-Argentine Quirino Cristiani, who in 1917 directed “The Apostle”; an Argentine production in which 58,000 drawings made by hand and shot in 35 mm were used, in addition to several models representing public buildings and the streets of the city of Buenos Aires.
