THE 1ST INTERNATIONAL “CINEMAGIC” FLIPBOOK COMPETITION BY FLIPBOKU AND WEIRD MARKET IS NOW OPEN
Flipboku, Flipboku, the Palma-based publishing house specializing in one of a kindone-of-a-kind flipbooks, and Weird Market, a leading specialist in International Animation, Video Games and New Media Market in Spain and one of the most renowned in Europe, have launched their 1st International Cinemagic Flipbook Contest. The call for submissions, of international scopecompetition, which invites entries from all over the world, has two categories, one for professionals and one for students, and is open until Thursday June 29th 2023 until 23:59 Mexico time.
Each flipbook will consist of six animated sequences of 40 frames each inusing all typesany type of animation techniques (3D, 2D, Stop motion, Pixilation, etc.). Flipboku’s “cinemagic” flipbooks differ from normal flipbooks asin that they feature a clever cutting technique. This feature provokesaccounts for a surprising optical illusion offering not two, but up to six different animated sequences, that can be triggered depending on the position of yourthe user’s thumb. This effect is not only visually stunning, but also offers other storytelling and narrative opportunities, which we invite you contestants to explore.
For both categories, animations with a narrative structured in six sequences will be accepted as well as six independent stories. The winning sequences will be published in flipbook format and presented at the 15th edition of Weird Market in 2023.
The winners in each category will be chosen by a jury composed of prestigious professionals from the world of animation such as Pete Docter, creative director of Pixar and winner of three Oscars (Up, Inside Out and Soul); Magdiela Hermida Duhamel, animation producer at major studios such as DreamWorks, Nickelodeon, Marvel and Pixar and founder of LatinX in Animation (LXiA); Raúl García, animator and director with a glittering international career working with studios such as Paramount and Disney, participating in big hits such as Aladdin, The Lion King and Who Framed Roger Rabbit; Isabel Herguera, visual artist and pioneer in computer animation, director of the feature film Sultana’s Dream; and Andy Bailey (Andymation), stop motion animator who has participated in major productions at the Laika studio such as Kubo and the Two Strings.
For the professional category, the first prize consists of the publication of the flipbook as part of the Flipboku catalog, a cash prize of €500, 15 copies of the flipbook and an accreditation with accommodation and meals for Weird Market 2023 in Valencia, Spain. The second prize consists of the publication of the flipbook as part of the Flipboku catalog, a cash prize of €300, 15 copies of the flipbook and an accreditation with accommodation and meals for Weird Market 2023.
For the student category, the prize consists of the publication of the flipbook as part of the Flipboku catalog, a cash prize of €250, 15 copies of the flipbook and an accreditation with accommodation and meals for Weird Market 2023 in Valencia, Spain. The second prize will consist of the publication of the flipbook as part of the Flipboku catalog, a cash prize of €150, 15 copies of the flipbook and an accreditation with accommodation and meals for Weird Market 2023.
